Former Pirate Bay spokesperson and co-founder Peter Sunde has launched a domain name registration anonymization service called\u00a0Njalla<\/a>, offering to protect customer data and privacy by owning the domain on behalf of the customer.<\/p>\n

Njalla takes it name from a traditional storage hut elevated by poles to keep its contents safe from animals. The company is not itself a domain registrar, and does not offer ownership by proxy as other domain privacy services do, but rather fully owns domains on behalf of its customers, who have complete control over them through the Njalla services agreement. The agreement also allows customers to transfer domain name ownership to themselves or another third party at no extra charge.<\/p>\n

\u201cNjalla is needed because we\u2019re going the wrong way in society regarding people\u2019s right to be anonymous. With social media pressuring us to be less anonymous and services being centralized, we need alternatives,\u201d Sunde told\u00a0TorrentFreak<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll key parts of the Internet need to have options for anonymity, and the domain name area is something which was never really protected. At best you can buy a domain name using \u2018privacy by proxy\u2019 services, which are aimed more at limiting spam than actually protecting your privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Njalla\u2019s prices range from \u20ac15 for 10 common TLDs like .com and .eu to \u20ac60 for 80 specialty TLDs like .careers and .pizza, and it accepts Bitcoin and PayPal payments. The company is based out of the small Caribbean Island of Nevis.<\/p>\n

Sunde was\u00a0convicted of copyright violations<\/a>\u00a0in 2009 and sentenced to 8 months in prison and a $6.9 million fine for his role in Pirate Bay. He told\u00a0TorrentFreak<\/em>\u00a0that he is not concerned about piracy among Njalla\u2019s customers, as the matter relates to content rather than domain names, and therefore does not involve the company.\u00a0 That line of reasoning will be familiar to those acquainted with the Pirate Bay history.<\/p>\n
